Happy Australia Day

It's another day dedicated to packing for me today, but I am going to reward myself with some yummy food at the end. The leg of lamb is in the fridge ready to go.... I'm making the traditional aussie lamb roast with three veg and gravy.

Depending on how the packing goes, I'm contemplating making a pavlova. I've only ever made pav once in my life and it was a complete and utter flat pancake inedible disaster.

But now I have a new secret pavlova weapon that I found at the oppy last week.... this plate might just be the answer to my pavlova dreams. Oh, and better still, it means less washing up!

It's just missing one vital instruction.... there's no mention of topping the pav with the traditional aussie crushed up peppermint crisp.

  3. That plate is GOLD. Last night we had dinner at our friends' house and they made pavlova sprinkled with peppermint crisp! I'd never had that before (it might be a victorian thing - friends were from Bairnsdale and Swan Hill).

Have a great day - enjoy the cooking-after-packing!

  6. Haha - it's Northland Anniversary over here in NZ and we've always claimed the pav as ours! My mum makes a mean one... but I've never quite got it sussed either! Love the plate!

  8. Happy Oz day to you too! That plate does look like a winner. I'm drooling at the idea of a yummy pav and peppermint crisp ... from my sadly egg-free house. We'll just have to go for lamb instead.

(PS. There's a structural trick you can try for raising the pav ... its to sort of do furrows up the sides after you stick the mixture on the plate. This supports the pav as it bakes)

  12. I have a fantastic recipe for pav if yours doesn't work out... really simple and so delicious!

The trick is whipping the egg whites until they're thick and shiny...

  15. Great minds Cam! Bought one in Mornington on Sunday! Is yours a baking one as well as a serving one? Mine appears to be, and Mother-In-Law whipped one up to see if it worked! Best $2 I've spent in ages! LOVE yours - snap!!
