Butterfly or Butterflop?

I've been tinkering around with the idea of making some butterfly brooches for quite a while now. I had a little bit of spare time Saturday afternoon (after a big sleep in), and this is what I came up with.

I'm not quite sure if the size is appropriate. I need to make them large enough to easily disguise the brooch finding at the back, but I need some more opinions.

Do you think the size is too large, and would you wear it?

  1. I think the size is fine and it's a terrific idea. Have you experimented with bigger top wings and smaller bottom ones? I think that might help shift from clover/flower shaped to more butterfly shaped.

  2. Gorgeous, Cam! Not too big at all. If you're wearing such a beautiful piece you want everyone to be able to see it!

  3. I think they are absolutely gorgeous, although a bit big for me. Cherrie

  4. i like butterflies and would use one of these on one of my many hats...if you happen to sell them in that beautiful blue, i have a hat in need of such trim =-)

  5. Are they wider than the flower Curly Pops brooches? If they are about the same width or a bit narrower I think the size is great. I wouldn’t go wider than the flowers, sometimes when I am wearing my flower with certain tops and driving it scrapes against my arm. Perhaps that means I should do something about the fact that my arms are getting just a touch too wide??!!! I love the butterfly design, the antennae are just adorable. I have some button brooches in the works; hopefully they will be ready to share today.

  6. I think they're cute! Not too big, not too small. I'm not a brooch kind of girl, but these are definitely wearable and not at all too 'old lady-ish' (always my fear with brooches).

  7. they look fantastic Cam! the colours are great & love that the feeler bits are curly but a little bit wonky too, making them almost look like jewellery. i love the pattern with the flowers.
i think you need someone to road test them and see how they go..hmmm :)
    noice!

  8. I really like the design, but they're probably a bit big for me - about a third smaller would be perfect. Just another idea - maybe two pieces of fabric - a double wing with one samller than the other in contrasting fabrics?? Love your stuff!

  9. They're fabulous - I love their design and the colours are really pretty, without being too fussy or girly-girl.

  12. gorgeous colour :D wouldn't make them any bigger, maybe a bit smaller is possible, then could maybe wear 2 or 3 and look like fluttering butterflies taking off

  13. Oh, Wow!! They are magnificent! They probably are a little big for me, but I want one anyway. I'll attach it to a bag or something if I can't attach it to me. I REALLY like them :-)

  15. Not too big at all, I think the size is fine. I was also going to suggest (but Amy beat me to it!) that you could try bigger top wings and smaller bottom wings?
They are really lovely Cam :)

  16. As a brooch lover, I'd have to say slightly too big for me, but then if the bottom wings were smaller it wouldn't be. I'm quite particular about what butterfly shapes I like though, so my advice is a bit skewed!

  23. These are so cute - but I think Amy (badskirt) is right about the top wings being slightly bigger than the bottom. I love the colours too.

  24. I also go with the top wings being slightly larger than the bottom. Otherwise, gorgeous!

  26. As a lover of butterflies and brooches I think they're very sweet. I would like to see them ever so slightly smaller or alternately with the top wing slightly bigger than the bottom one. Like the roundy, round shape though. Reminds me of all your pretty flowers and makes it very you! I'd definitely wear one. Beautiful colours too! Reminds me of those lovely turquoise flowers you made recently. I meant to email you back about those, but alas, busy Mum stuff got in the way... are they all gone???
