An endangered species

I tootled down to Spotlight today in search of some fabric with a car print as I have some little boy birthdays coming up very soon...

I searched the entire shop and couldn't find anything AT ALL for boys. No camo prints, no skull and crossbones, NOTHING!

So I decided to ask what happened to the teeny tiny section that was called Boyzone. I was told that the boyzone fabrics have been discontinued, and they have nothing is stock, unless I could find something on the clearance table. They said that the decision had been made by Head Office.

What the????? Have boys all of a sudden become an endangered species in the fabric world?

  1. It completely sucks doesn't it - trying to find boys prints is like trying to find a needle in a haystack

  2. In my local store they still have some pirate themed and road map fabrics, although personally I wouldn't use them because they are a bit loud and tacky, in my own humble opinion. Nothing so simple and beautiful as that little cars fabric. They seemed to have sold out to "licenced" products, like every kid and parent only needs disney/ cartoon/wiggles. Its disgusting. The best you can probably do is spots or stripes, or shop online. Good luck!

  3. that's really interesting because when I went to Spotlight last week I also couldn't see any 'boy' stuff (and I'm in Auckland) Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough

love the little car fabric though :D

  4. I stock a small amount of boy themed fabric in my etsy store but have found that it doesn't sell particularly well, maybe other fabric sellers have a similar problem.

I also have a few fat quarters of a kokka car fabric sililar to one you have pictured in a cotton/linen blend. It isn't currently up in the store but if you are interested let me know.

Sorry for the gratuitous self promotion but I hope this helps.

  6. every spotlight is like their own country, the natives can be either feral or friendly

my old local was like val hala full to overflowing with great finds and the natives were generous with their time

my new local is like boganville on a goodday, sometimes you'll find crap all other days its mediocre at best and the natives are well you know its boganville....hahaha

why am I rambling??? anyhoo each spotlight is different I can still find heaps of boys stuff the ugly and the not so ugly at mine
    better luck next time

  7. I went shopping for boyish stripes the other day, and all their multicoloured stripes are heavy on pink. I can get blue & white stripes or green & white stripes, but not lovely colourful non-pink stripes.

    Bring back the boys!

  8. It's ridiculous and drives me crazy. One of the main reasons I love etsy, though it's a pain having to pay for postage when Spotlight is 5 mins drive from my house!

  9. I've got 2 boys and wanted to make sure I catered for boys with the bibs I make, it's hard to find suitable fabrics and then I've found that the girl and neutral prints are the best sellers anyway. Totally sucks.

  10. As if it wasnt already hard enough to find "boy things", they go and make it just that little more difficult. There is a shop near me that sells only boy-related stuff just because of that.

  11. I was in Spotty looking for diggers, cars, trucks or the like. Could NOT find anything, a few skulls and camo, not right for my 2 year old. His birthday blanket will be stars, spots and.....strawberries.

  12. My local spotlight store didn't even have navy demin!! They are fast becoming a drapery store & party supplier with the fabric/haberdashery section becoming smaller & smaller.

  13. Oh cr*p. As if it weren't bad enough that there are next to no commercial patterns for boyswear ... now there is nothing to sew it all in either.

  14. thats daft that they discontinued fabric like that. not everything that is made is for a girl and having to use blue fabric for boys would just get boring after awhile

  15. If you rule out liscenced characters and military themed fabric there's even less. My Bug is known as Mister Stripes because that is what he usually wears. We'll just have to reclaim butterflies and rainbows for the boys!

  16. You should try rathdown remnants, they sometimes have some boy fabrics.
