I gave her a cute little flannel buggy wrap and some sweet little bibs in girlie prints. Once I'm settled, I'm going to attempt a patchwork floor rug. Does anyone have any tips for making these? I'm thinking of doing a cotton patchwork top, maybe a couple of polar fleece layers in the middle, but then I'm not quite sure whether I should just use cotton for the bottom layer. I just need to keep in mind that it must be really easy to wash and dry.

I love those Fiskars hole punches - aren't they great?
ReplyDeleteThe best advice I can give you about making floor rugs for kids, is to keep it fairly natural. Polar flecce is extremely flammable, and it's something to avoid with a rug if there is a gas or wood fire - if the rug gets dragged too close to the flame, then it's whoooosh and ouch.
However if an open flame isn't an issue, then I would just make a cotton top and a polarfecce bottom and tie the two together rather than quilting. Otherwise a cotton top, wool/poly blend batting and a flannel bottom is very cosy too.
Tying is the best method for floor rugs - it's quick and not at all fussy and it looks pretty good too!
Well even if there's not a lot of creativity going on (I find that very hard to believe!), it's very pretty over at yours. Love all those gorgeous colours together.
ReplyDeleteI had read somewhere someone did polar fleece, but Michelle has explained why not to, so there goes my suggestion.
Onegirl was making a gorgeous rug/throw/picnic quilt a while ago (I think)..
Thanks for the birthday wishes. Congrats to your friend. Special to have a gift for her daughter from you. Cate with a C is such a nice twist on the tradiitonal Kate. I always wanted to be Kate with a C ... but have grown to love Kate with a K. I sat next to a Cate at work. Hilarious Cate/Kate issues.
ReplyDeleteA stash of ready made baby gifts is wonderful. I'm always scrambling around at the last minute trying to make stuff super quickly.
ReplyDeleteYep go to One girl! I wish I had a girl so I could make that beautiful floor rug. Although it looks a bit involved for me! lol
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful way to spell Cate! I love it. It almost makes me want to have another girl... not! ;)
ReplyDeletenothing better than a handmade baby card! I think all bubbys things should be handmade with pure love hehe

Sounds like you have more than enough banked-up creative projects and future projects on the boil to get you through any quiet patches along the way!
ReplyDeleteAlso like the colour combo in this post - it's very you!
A handmade baby card is a lovely thought. It will beat all those duplicate commercial ones that turn up!
ReplyDeleteI was given a lovely floor rug when Bargy was born. It was made out of flannelette and was ever so soft and washed like a dream. It was brilliant. The downside is that flannelette is also supposed to be flammable (anything with a slight pile, I think). Still we managed not to catch Bargy alight!
You've been busy!
ReplyDeleteCam the buggy wrap and bibs are gorgeous!! I love making cards that is a big part of my little business actually lol. I have to agree that Fiskars punches are the best.
