Excuse the pants - I only iron when I'm sewing!
I decided that a top would be more practical than a dress. I had this lovely vintage fabric in the stash that I received from a friends mum. It was from the same lot as the Tahiti fabric.
The fabric is quite sheer, so I interfaced the top rectangular sections, and added a muslin lining to the front drapey section. I had to overlock all of the seams to prevent it from fraying too.
The front and the back are exactly the same, which makes it a little bulky at the back (the back doesn't have any lining), and I widened the shoulder straps to make sure that my bra wouldn't be on show.
This one actually made it out of the house, as I gave it a swelter test run during yesterdays heatwave. I think I quite like it!
Great job! It's fabbo, love the fabric too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I'm making a similar yoked sleeveless top at the moment and it's great to wear but an absolute pain to make (too much hand sewing!!)
ReplyDeleteHave you heard about Cal Patch's book on designing your own clothes? It's great!
I would wear this out and about too :) Great top.
ReplyDeleteRed never fails to work does it?? Looks great & i did giggle at the wrinkled pants, i iron in batches too, in the studio, NOT IN THIS HEAT!! You're completely forgiven. Love Posie

This top is beautiful, I've totally been looking for a top like that for ages!
ReplyDeleteWell done
Emma :)
You are going really well with your "no pattern" sewing... the top is cute... i used to sew only with no patterns... but i found it really helpful to try sewing some clothes from patterns to teach me about the way clothing is constructed because i really didn't like my clothes looking "home made", or in other words, "something i just cooked up in my sewing room" (and i had a few of those in my cupboard, believe me)...
ReplyDeletePlease don't take this next part as insulting, because it's not supposed to be...
the bias binding around the yoke of the top looks a little "crafty" at the corners (where it meets the straps)... could i suggest trying New Look 6775 or anna maria horner's socialite dress (very similar styles, although anna marias has hand stiching and a v-yoke)... these will teach you a LOT about construction of a basic yoked top/dress...
gosh i hope i haven't offended you, because i really haven't meant to!
