My Creative Space

Please excuse the poorly taken iPhone photos

I'm showing you yesterdays creative space, as it's much more exciting than todays!

Cathy and I headed to Jackson Cafe and Gallery yesterday and took on the art challenge. It was so nice to just be able to get together and do something creative and fun.

The idea is that bring along your own art supplies (I took my artist pens and textas) and after your brunch/lunch/coffee/cake etc, you're given a piece of artists paper and a time limit of 30 minutes to make a piece of art.

In around four weeks time, there'll be an exhibition, and visitors will be able to vote for a winner. The pieces will be sold with the money collected donated to a charity of the winners choice.

Such a brilliant idea!

Have you ever tried to create a piece of art in such a short time frame?

All Frocked Up

Please excuse the very blurry mobile phone pic

I remember sending out a Twitpic of my dress design on the day that I was drawing it, so I went back and checked, and it was November 10th last year.

Sheesh! It's taken me a really long time to actually use it....

So, here it is, in lovely colourful tones (because I just can't do bland).

I won't have time to add these to the shop before the market, so if you would like to purchase one in either colour, just send through an email and I'll pop one aside for you!

Artist in Training

Nikki's Wee Girl had a birthday a couple of weeks ago, and I gave her one of my snail cards with her pressie.

Then I received a lovely suprise thankyou card and drawing when I arrived yesterday. She's worked really hard at getting the details exactly the same with all the colours and stripes.

Definitely one of the arty-farty-designer-types of the future!

My Creative Space - a granny square.... of sorts

The case of the sewjo kidnapped by the lurgy has meant that it's been drawing central in my creative space this week.

Which has led to lots of mucking around in photoshop working on a new design.

I figured that if I can't crochet a granny rug, then why not just make my own drawn / digital version?

So of course, there are now fabric samples on the way.....

Have you Pinned Up Your Doodle?

Good news - the closing date for Pin Up Your Doodle has been extended to this Friday November 12th!

I thought I'd missed out because I hadn't posted mine by the end of October.

From the website:

The doodles will be exhibited in Melbourne in November 18-21 and auctioned at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art on November 24.

100% of the funds raised by PUYD will be donated to Shebeen, a non-profit bar that will open in Melbourne soon(ish) to support some super smart projects in the developing world.

There's even a Pin Up Your Doodle Blog - quick get your skates on before you miss it!

Muddled

There's so much a happenin' at the moment, that I can't remember whether I'm Martha or Arthur! So many blogtoberfestians, and I'm quite sure that I haven't even made it through half the list yet.

I've forgotten what I've shown and what I've told.... maybe I tweeted it but didn't blog it?

Anyhow..... I decided amongst all the little critters and characters that I've been working on, that maybe I'd try a floral design. This is the blue version (there's also a yellow version but my photos were terrible). I'd really envisioned this in pink, orange and red, but I couldn't get red, so it just didn't work.

My sister told me that this one doesn't actually look like me. It could have been designed by anyone. It might be pretty but it might also be something you could just find at Spotlight.... and I tend to agree.

So I guess it's back to the drawing board - quite literally!

What day is it?

I don't seem to know what's going on around here. Somewhere between the beginning of Blogtoberfest and Daylight Savings, my brain has lost a day.

I have quite a few appointments this week, so here's hoping that I don't miss any!

It was such a glorious day yesterday, so in the afternoon I picked up Moo Moo from home, and took him for a drive to pick up his big brother from school, so that I could take them both to the skate park (my ulterior motive being that I could sit and draw in the sunshine and fresh air).

He was deliriously tired and yapped all the way to school and kept calling me Nan instead of Cam (he just spent last weekend at his Nan's house). Then poor little Moo Moo fell asleep in the car one minute before the school bell rang....... which meant that most of his scooter riding time at the skate park was spent snoring instead.

When I finally woke him up to go and play, I'd half finished my drawing. Luckily for me, Moo Moo (who is three) could correctly identify (even in his half asleep state) that I was trying to draw a turtle.... and next up, he wants a Lion???

Patience is a virtue

I keep telling myself that I have to wait until my fabric samples arrive before I can design any more....

It's not working!

The Psychedelic Snail in Technicolour Delight

gif animator online

I suddenly had a feeling of deja vu lastnight, when I remembered that I'd created a snail many moons ago.

After feeling a little naked yesterday.... Mr (or is that Ms - just how do you sex a snail?) Snail now exists in a psychedelic technicolour dream .

I missed animation Friday last week, so this is my belated contribution (snails are very slow after all).

*Yes, Snail greeting cards are on their way - I just couldn't resist printing them.

The Owl and The Dragster

Are Owls still on trend? Penny was asking that question yesterday.

I'm hoping that they are, as this is my latest drawing that I've turned into a greeting card (and will soon turn into a fabric).

I also drew a Dragster this week...... I decided to give it a coloured background before colouring it in, and it ended up that I really liked the effect of leaving the dragster white. Design by accident!

These are also available as greeting cards at the moment, and will become fabrics very soon.

My latest lot of test swatches from Spoonflower have been shipped, so fingers crossed that they all work out so I can place a real order!

My Creative Space & Blogtoberfest

I'm slightly late and disorganised today - the busy week has caught up with me!

In my creative space is my Pin Up Your Doodle submission that I began working on yesterday. I was colouring it in a public space yesterday and someone asked me why the tulips weren't yellow?

Most of this weeks creativity has been dedicated to lots of drawing, and then lots of photoshopping. I'll have new designs for cards, and for fabrics on the way very very soon, which I'm super excited about.

I was printing test cards lastnight when my magenta cartridge ran out (whodathunkit)... so the first mission for today is to buy more ink.

Pop on over to visit Kirsty to play along this week.

Blogtoberfest - Large - White Background

In other SUPER EXCITING news..... it's Blogtoberfest Eve!

Make sure that you pop on over and visit this post at Tinniegirl to sign up and play along for the month.

This year I have a separate Blogtoberfest page dedicated to all the giveaways on offer. Just follow the simple instructions to add your giveaway to the list - of course, if there are any problems, just email me: mscurlypops (at) gmail (dot) com

I just couldn't help myself

I was trying to save these until next week, but I just can't resist blogging them!

I had my original illustrations printed onto fabric....

.....and now I've turned the printed fabric into Flex Frame iPhone / Gadget Pouches.

These little pouches have a nice soft layer of wadding for protection and also include a nifty rear pocket to stash your earphones (or whatever else you may like to stash)!

Both designs are available in the CurlyPops Shop right now.

I heart... submission

This is my completed submission for the I Heart ... Zine that I was working on a couple of weeks ago.

I've had to replenish my supply of fineliner pens in Pink, Orange and Red..... hmmmm, I wonder why that would be?

Printed Card

So here's a little show and tell of my first creations using the printed fabrics from my original drawings.

I went in search of card stock in my local suburb on the weekend.

The only thing that I could find was the local scrapbooking shop.....

.....which had this not so nice quality card stock.

Have you ever walked into a scrapbooking shop before? Well golly gee, I hadn't! I suppose it's just like stepping foot into a place like Amitie... only for lovers of paper.

The thing that I don't really understand about scrapbooking (and I don't want to offend any scrapbookers), but there's quite a lot of things already pre-prepared. Fifty percent of the shop must have been dedicated to things that just peel and stick (and those things are expensive)!. Does that take away from the creativity?

Back onto the topic at hand - if anyone has some tips on where to find really nice high quality pre-prepared card stock, I would love to know.... in the meantime, I've been challenged to create something with that fabric Medicare Tax statement!

Sunday Scribbles

After following along with Tinniegirls Journey over the last few months, it's really got me thinking about how much I loved art when I was in high school. Unfortunately, I had to ditch all of the art subjects that I loved and concentrate on maths and science in order to follow my chosen career path.

Then this week, Jess blogged about taking a drawing class, which got my brain whizzing around even more.

I can't really take on any classes at the moment, but I think that I really should spend some time just doodling around for fun.

Inspired by my favourite vintage fabric (that I used to make my pen roll), this is the first of my scribbles. It's perfect timing considering that I seem to have so much spare time on my hands at the moment!
