Flo's Golden Syrup Dumplings
I was trawling through blogland yesterday evening, and came across Screamtress's post where she just happened to mention Golden Syrup Dumplings.
From that point on, I just couldn't resist, and went in search of a recipe and the ingredients.
Back in my younger years at uni, it was standard fare for dessert in our share house all through winter (being cheap and stodgy to fill us up).
I always check out my Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen recipe book first. If it's something traditional and basic and easy, then the recipe is just about guaranteed to be in here..... and of course, if you have a spill or a stain while you're cooking, then you just flick through to the handy hints in the back to fix it!
Some of the recipes that I've looked at include egg in the dumplings, but these are just flour, butter and milk.
Dumplings
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Cup Self Raising Flour
1/2 Cup Milk (approximately)
Rub butter into flour, and then add milk a little at a time, mixing to a stiff dough.
Form into balls.
Sauce/Syrup
1 Tablespoon Golden Syrup (I used 2 instead because I love golden syrup)
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Water
Juice of 1 Lemon (I didn't have one so I left it out)
Bring water, syrup, sugar and juice to the boil in a saucepan.
Drop the dumplings into the boiling syrup - cook for 10-20 minutes.
I made quite small dumplings so they only took about 10 minutes to cook through. If the boiling syrup is getting too thick, just add some more water.
Then the best bit - place a couple (or 5 if you're me) of dumplings in a bowl, spoon over some syrup, and then add cream or ice-cream, and EAT!

Yum, yum, yum! I loved these growing up - and they are simple and tasty. Might have to introduce these to my kids!
Curlypops you've made my day! I have printed your recipe (it looks a good one) and now I'm going to get me a new taste of some Golden Dumplings Thanks and YUM!
Seriously yum!!!!!
Can't wait to make me some of those.
Yep, they have to be one of the best winter sweets and can be eaten any time of the day depending what your situation is.
I've never had golden syrup dumplings. My mum is from the USA so our menu was always tipped in that direction rather than being typically Australian (including a big Thanksgiving get-together every year!) But I think you've juts convinced me to bring a bit of Aussie-ness into my own kitchen!
That's just not fair ... now I've got the munchies (again)
oh i am soooooo making these!
and also joining a gym. i can see myself making them all the time!
Oh I used to LOVE these, haven't had them in years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, a classic they are indeed. Might have to add golden syrup to my shopping list today...
OMG ms curly pops! I was just sitting here trying not to think how hungry I was when I read your post! Thats so unfair, I need to lose another couple of kilos for my sisters wedding!!!!
I must give you my Jam Rolli Polli recipe, it is similar to GSD's.... Yummy!
Oh yeah, they are super easy to make and oh so delicious. I treat my family to this quite often although I use brown sugar. Either way, they are beautiful to eat but oh so bad for the hips. Who cares, its so cold you can't see my hips under 13 layers of clothing anyway!
Yum! I might just make those tonight! My dinner for tonight is inspired by a Cuggles Kids post this afternoon (bacon and mushroom baked risotto). All these blog inspired goodies could have me as big as a house!
best food porn ever!
Ooooooh yummy!!!! They look delicious :)
Yummm-I might have to go chase down a can of golden syrup.
Tina
I have never actually made golden syrup dumplings but it is something that I grew up with and LOVE! Mmm, I'll have to give them a go....or put in a special request from you know who.
I do I do love GSDs! My other half makes them from time to time - the recipe from where else but Margaret Fulton, now falling apart from years of good use. So good!
And not a fruit in sight!!
Gotta love Flo's book. On a par with the good old Cookery the Australian Way schoolbook. Cherrie
ooh! going to have to get some syrup now from the store and make these...hmm might still have some in the cupboard *goes to look*
Yum! I love Golden Syrup Dumplings and this recipe looks much better than the one I've been using, def. going to give it a go!
OH YUM!! I haven't GSD is ages. I think they are the ultimate aussie comfort food, and very much bear food at that xo
mmm, I remember making and eating these in a history class at school - a clever teacher who knew the path to a childs brain is through their stomach! Thanks for the recipe!

I will link you on my blog and I'd like to invite you to visite also my blog :D
Laura from Italy
