I have a dilemma.
One of my girlfriends is due to give birth to her second baby at the end of next month, and she doesn't know whether she's having a boy or a girl.
After she had her first baby (a little boy), she bought this Michael Miller clown fabric, and the red spots, and some blue checks with the intention of making something for him.
She never got around to using it, so she gave it to me instead, assuming that I would use it to make something for my nephews.
Luckily for me, she doesn't read the blog as she's not much of an internet gal, so I'm safe in blogging about her surprise pressie..... and what I'm really planning on making with it.

My dilemma is making fabric selections for a baby quilt that is gender neutral. I have absolutely no problem in co-ordinating fabrics for boys or for girls..... but when it comes to making it unspecific, confusion sets in.I'm starting with the clowns, the red spots, and the green checks.
Then I added a blue and green spot.....
....and then a really light blue check
Would this really suit a boy or a girl, or does the addition of the blue make it too boyish?

So this is another option - Clowns, Yellow, Blue & Red
Or Clowns, Yellow, Green and Red
or Clowns, Yellow, Black Stripes, and red.

To be honest maybe a yellow instead might make it more neutral, thought the colours will look great regardless I am sure. The other thing is to add some ric rac or something after if it is a girl?
I'm not very good at this sort of thing...but I'd probably switch the beige spot for a yellow.

I think the clowns with the green gingham and the blue and green spot are very gender neutral. The red and white spots make me think girl and the blue and white gingham make me think boy so put the two together and I guess you get neutral!
By the way, I LOVE the blue and green spots!
I actually prefer the blue check to the green. It seems fresher and i don't think it would be too boyish at all, especially with the red. I personally try to veer away from too much red and green together as it feels a bit "Christmas-y" to me. If i have to use them together i always try to incorporate another colour just to break it up. Just my opinion though! Gorgeous fabric! Black and white would look great with the red as well (a lovely candy stripe!) I can't wait to see what you make. Make sure to put some pics up! xx
I was going to say yellow as well but I see I've already been pipped at the post! Perhaps a more aqua would fit in there somewhere as well?
That clown fabric is gorgeous!
I would quite happily use it for either a boy or girl so go for it! And if it is a girl she'll be given a hundred and 1 things pink so this will make a refreshing change.
I think with all of the red in there you wont have to worry which way you go. But yes, some yellow would certainly make it super non gender.
I am swaying towards some yello which would be more neutral than too much blue...yes, no maybe!!
That's going to make a great quilt. I love the clown print and the fabric you have matched with it. For a wee one, I'd have to agree with the other gals about adding some yellow. It seems to be the gold standard for "gender neutrality". It would also match nicely with the bottom of the clown's shoes!

Apart from the fact that clowns terrify me, I like the yellow/green combo.

I'm a huge fan of pulling the colours out of the feature fabric by using matches.
In order of picture options:
1. a touch dull, needs yellow.
2. the spots really activate the blue
3. either the blue/green spots or the blue and green. Too much when all 3 together, dulls it down
4. not bad
5. less "boyish" than 4
6. nah the black and white is too much. I have been known to bind in black to set off the colours, just a plain homespun otherwise it might get too busy.
I'd go yellow, red, blue/green spots which covers all the colours in the clowns. Oops and now I've written an epic, sorry.

2nd otion of yellow green and red is my favourite. If you want to be neutral you have to either eliminate poth pink and pale blue or add both. I also want to thankyou for have me on your list because when blogger doesn't give me upto date posts on my list I use yours to get my most up to the minute list. Does that make sense? Anyway thanks. I love the addition of the yellow spots. I think it's a great add. I'm not a big fan of the black stripes though. Ages ago, I made a quilt in similar colour combinations. It was my first quilt so it's extremely wonky, but maybe it will help inspire?

Actually I like the second photo! I like the spotty one added with the original first.... not so keen on yellow myself... but that is just me!
i think go with the second last option where you added the yellow with the original three fabrics. I think if you use blue it makes it too boyish and the black stripes i think is a bit dark for a baby quilt.
I like the 2nd last option too but I'd put the green back in. I'm looking forward to watching this take shape.
I actually prefer the blue, because it's such a bright colour it feels more gender neutral than other shades of blue would. The green works beautifully but maybe a little more girly than neutral. I'm not sure about the black, think it's a bit too heavy.
I liked your first colour combination - but like the yellow too - not mad on the stripes....

What a dilema! I'm hopeless at this at the moment, but I'll give it a go - yellow spot, with the red and the michale miller! There, now maybe I should get off the computer and go and choose some fabrics to make something!
Definately needs the yellow - it lifts it and looks great. Personally I like the blue better than the green (and that's something coming from me being such a green girl). What pattern are you thinking of doing??
Mmmm... I would take any of your selections and add lots of white. Or a plain white with a super-thin stripe in one of the other colours.
Why? Fresher colours mean no gender bias. I just made that up, of course. But it works for me!
I've been making a gender-neutral quilt this afternoon too and it's HARD to pick colours. I like the Clowns, Yellow, Green and Red Spot or the Clowns, Yellow, Blue and Red Spot. They're all pretty nice though!

I don't think the black stripe. Keep the green check. I think the small blue check is what makes it look boyish - blue for boys, pink for girls, but most others ok for both. I'm not so much a yellow person but I think that colour combo is the best - red, green, yellow because it still matches the clowns. Good Luck! Lou
As you know, I like more plain options. I think some of the spots are too much. I'd so for the green check as contrast. And it's gender neutral and not too loud.

Much as I am a fan of green, I like the option with blue, the first one of the second lot.
Oh, you are having the same dilemma I am!! :-) Personally, I like the last 3 options the best. I really like the yellow in there. But is a matter of the blue gingham, the green gingham, or the black and white stripes. I think the selection with the green gingham (clowns, yellow green and red) is probably the most gender neutral, but I also like the black and white striped fabric to add a bit of dimension (similar to that which you have with the clown fabric). It would make a nice collection.
Whichever one you choose will look beautiful! Can't wait to see the final result!

Arrghhh! Clowns!! LOL I have a clown thang that I really like to keep lots of space between them and me. Don't know why....
