So here it is... my very first successful pavlova, and I owe it all to the magic pavlova plate from the oppy. I used Hoppo Bumpo's suggestion of trying to build up the sides to make it more structural and it worked really well (so I didn't get that flat pancake effect again).
Apparently the Peppermint Crisp topping is a Victorianism, but Wikipedia says that "The Peppermint Crisp is often used in Mint-Chocolate cheesecakes and slices. In Australia, it is almost solely used to decorate a 'Pav'"
Then of course, there's also the debate about whether the humble pav really originates from Australia or New Zealand. I'm very sad to say that Wikipedia believes that we aussies lose out in this regard... "The dessert is believed to have been created to honour the dancer, Anna Pavlova during or after one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand. The exact location of its first creation and the nationality of its creator has been a source of argument between the two countries for many years, however more serious research into the matter indicates New Zealand as source of today's pavlova" - Sewfunky and Paisley Jade were absolutely correct!
Oh well...... here it is in all it's magic pavlova glory, smothered in whipped cream and topped with smashed up peppermint crisp......mmmmmmm

Not much of a pav fan but yours does look delicious.
Yum, I so wish i was eating that right now..xx
Yummmmm! This looks soo good.
It looks bloody delicious!!!
Wow it looks great! The first one I made came out perfect but I didn't know it was supposed to be difficult, so of course the second one I made was atrocious and I haven't tried again!
Yum yum yum yum.
Looks sensational - so glad you went with the peppermint crisp!
Nice work mate. Gotta love the peppermint crisp... it just makes it!
And I honestly thought it was an Aussie icon!
I went to my first Australia Day barbeque a year or two ago, and when I said "What's a pav?" I nearly got mobbed. Nicely, of course. They all wanted me to try it.
Naturally, I obliged.
Yours looks like the goods!
OMG I cannot believe you have this Pav plate! I have one in my cupboard that I have had for nearly 30 years, or did someone take it to the op shop while i wasn't looking?
Yum looks like the recipe works1
Happy Australia Day
Miriam
yep its 100% victorian! I'd never heard of it till I visited justin's brother in the country and was introduced to it!!!! yum....looks good
Corrie:)
The plate is still there! Oh thankgoodness!
how can the rest of Australia have their pavs without Peppermint Crisp? Surely that is why every gathering should have two - one with bananas and strawberries and one with yummy chocolatey minty crisp!
well done Cam! it's beaten me every time!
Woohoo - it looks sensational. Nice touch using the meat mallet to smash up the Peppermint Crisp too. Yummo!
That is a fine looking pav!
Would it be un-Australian of me (and these days, isn't everything labelled un-Australian?) to say I don't like Peppermint Crisp? Top mine with strawberries and passionfruit any day.
Great looking pav, I have never seen one with Peppermint Crisp on it before. We usually have ours with Kiwi fruit and strawberries.
Peppermint Crisp? On a pav? That's crazy! It's got to be strawberries all the way :)
Looks delish! :)
I like mine with cream and kiwifruit on top!
that pav looks awesome with the peppermint crisp on top. If i could eat peppermint I would make one for desert tonight.
looks lovely! i think i'd go for the fruit topping like a few others suggested . . .but if looks gorgeous and yummy just the same.
Cam that looks delicious, I love pav although I have never had it with peppermint crisp on top so I will have to try that
Well done Cam!!!! We usually put cream and bananas or passionfruit. I NEVER have thought of this - next time - though I am a bit like you I am not so good with the pavs....
It's the bomb! Well done.
I've never heard of these bars before... I'll have to look for some for next time I make a pav.
Who wants to bet the wiki article was written by a Kiwi? :)
I can't believe you didn't share it with us!?! Thats okay though I am sure you will make us some when you come to stay!
phwoar!!!! YUM! (I reckon the plate did make a difference!!)
I would never have thought of putting a crushed Peppermint Crisp on a Pav, but it looks so yummy! I'm going to have to try that next time.
Hey Cam, OK if I use this pep-crisp photo please in a similar post? All will be linked and noted as yours etc. Let me know if you say NO. Thanks. Jess
