Eye Spy....something delicious

Eye Spy some delicious scones (made by Liesl) that I bought home from yesterdays Thornbury Craft Bonanza at Amitie....

I haven't felt much like blogging today. I spent the day packing linen and kitchen items, with Sky News on in the background, updating the Victorian Bushfire crisis minute by minute. It's now 9.20 PM, and the latest news is that 76 people have lost their lives, and there are still more missing.

Apparently, the best way to help is to send a donation of money, or to donate blood (as there are many burns victims who will desperately need it over the next few weeks). The Red Cross Bushfire Appeal information can be found here, and you can find out how to donate blood here.

As I was packing boxes in the afternoon, there was a woosh of wind in the tree outside the kitchen door and then a big thump. This poor little Mama possum had fallen out of the tree and landed on my concrete patio. She was still alive and had a little baby in her pouch who was sucking away trying to get some milk.

I tried calling all of the wildlife rescue services, but I'm sure that they have been inundated with the bushfires, so I called the local Vet hospital instead. I packed her up in a box and took her along to the hospital. The vet was going to have a look at her and then call someone who looks after native wildlife.

Apparently, she was the fourth possum taken to their hospital today.....

Gosh isn't all the news is so sad - the scale of what happened in such a short time is almost beyond comprehension. And poor possum and little baby. Its a good thing you were able to take her to the vet.

Good luck with your packing.

Poor possum... as well as the tragedy of human life there are so many animals suffering right now, it's all so sad. You did a good thing taking care of possum, hope she and the baby survived.

Oh, the poor thing...
With regard to the bushfires, The Toy Society and I are collaborating on a little project involving donating handmade toys to families affected by the fires. Please take a look!

Oh CurlyPops, thankyou for doing what you could. Just imagine how much wildlife has been killed and injured in the fires?! Not to mention stock and pets. It's just tragic! And the people who have lost loved ones? I wish I could get down there and help somehow. At least in the QLD flooding, not too many people have died. Fires just seem so much more terrible...did you hear about the 5 year old boy who was taken by a croc in the floodwaters?

All this loss is breaking my heart.

We saved a possum during the heatwave last week - by the time wildlife rescue rang us back I'd spoken to a vet (who said the possum would only be put down if I took it in). We kept the possum in a box with a drink of water and some leaves and apple... and after about three hours it RAN away. At least one life spared. THe woman from WIldlife rescue said that in her three hour shift so far she's had 47 calls about possums... and more about Koalas.
