The reason for the BOY fabric
So after my complete waste of time trip to Spotlight* yesterday, I came home and searched through the stash instead.
I couldn't find any car fabric, but I did find an offcut of this cute little heavy machinery fabric... plus the stripey fabric for the binding, some navy cotton drill, and blue felt.
....so I set about making a birthday pressie, loosely based on this tutorial.
There are eight little pockets for Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars, and you can fold the flap over.....
....and roll it up. Perfect for a bit of play on the run.
I decided to use velcro for the closure as the birthday boy is a bit too young to be tying things up just yet.
* I have sent a complaint email to Spotlight to find out what is going on.
** Message to Moo Moo - don't worry - Aunty CurlyPops will not be including your hot wheels cars with the pressie. They're all heading back to your toy box!

Brilliant idea!!! good on you!!
Love it! Thanks for the tutorial link, I'll certainly be making my own version in the future. All my nieces are girls (they get felt food) but when Jack's old enough for Matchbox cars he'll get a caddy.
fantastic idea Cam...
and love seeing "boy" pressie's...
After having two boys I know how hard it is to come up with interesting handmade ideas...
This one is just lovely!!!
Oh Superpops you've done it again, it's genius!
That is so cool! And I'll bet you are 'brumming' those cars around all over the place until they need to go back :D Or is it just me that does that??
this looks great cam ... and good on you re the spotlight complaint. it's as though only girls have things made for them. what's with that thought?
my daughter *cough* has been having fun with two 10cm x 180m strips of black cotton drill for roads and her cars ... I want to make something a bit more longer lasting, with traffic lights and other spaces. At church yesterday they had one of those mats with roads marked on them, but I want it to be more generic. Still thinking ...
I am glad you have registered you disappointment with spotlight, their “boy” range was dismal enough anyway (especially if you don’t like skulls and cross bones or camo for little ones). BUT on a brighter note, didn’t it feel good to use up a bit of the stash?? It looks great, I am sure it will be a huge hit.
This is BRILLIANT! My little car lover would love to have this to carry his favourites around everywhere we go...my handbag would be a whole lot lighter too!
Wow that is so good , who needs that other store !
Fantastic! You are a clever Miss! So glad someone is on to Spotlight as well. :)
That's great Cam!
Your stash fabric works really well and the velcro for little fingers is inspired!!
Love it, want to make one for my son. I had exactly the same problem at spotlight yesterday, no boy fabric, grr.
What a fantastic little car carrier - really cool.
Awesome Cam, absolutely awesome! You've done a brilliant job. My only concern is that Moo Moo's worry isn't that he wont get his cars back.... it's that he wont get them back with the track!
I have passed your site on to my nieces for their grandchildren, you are a wonder Curly Pops.
Fantastic present for a little boy. I always find making and finding boy pressies hardest.
Oh, this IS great. Plenty of good boy fabric at other fabric places, albeit more expensive. I just used some lovely car fabric to make a little drawstring bag for a 3yo to tote his cars around in. Wish I'd made this swanky carry-all though, with the track and all! So cute.
Oh yes, i love boys' fabrics, cars are aces. Nice work, love Posie
Wow!! GREAT idea...will be putting on my to do list once my little boy meets the world very very soon!

That is such a great idea - never seen anything like it before!!! Whoever the special boy is... he is going to be wrapped!! (no pun intended).
Very cool idea! And a good reminder to keep some boy fabrics in my stash - never know when you'll need some.
Such a great idea! I can never rely on Spotlight for fabric. I can never find what I want there.
There just can't be enough boy pressie tutorials - I always get stuck on boy craft. Now this one is a DOOZY!
PS. Would you like to borrow my Spotlight Voodoo Doll pincushion?
what a grand idea!
wow, you never cease to amaze me with your clever sewing...this is fabulous.
Finn is car mad and would just adore one...thanks for sharing.
they look great, love the fabric, so will any little boy
I love this. What a great gift idea....I'm thinking an easter gift idea for my boys and a few others!! Thanks for sharing
